If you’ve been involved in a car accident, you’re probably dealing with a lot of issues and ‘to-dos’. Depending on the severity of the accident, you may need to call the police or your family, plan for alternative transport means, and probably rearrange the plans you had before the accident. Also, you have to file an insurance claim - and all that while experiencing psychological discomfort or trauma that even a minor collision can induce.

When you have a car accident, your adrenaline production is increased. You need to remember that this hormone can conceal the pain, so you may not feel it at first, plus some injuries aren’t instantly apparent.

If you’ve had an auto accident, be conscious of the following injuries that often don't manifest themselves immediately.

Whiplash

Whiplash, or neck strain, is one of the most prevalent injuries during car accidents. That’s because whiplash is experienced when your head is forced backward, then forth, very fast - as it is when your car crashes against something and halts abruptly.

Without proper treatment, you suffer from a neck injury for weeks, months, or sometimes years. Dr. Escobar works with whiplash patients to manage their pain, rebuild their range of motion, and prevent future complications.

Concussion

A different yet more dangerous injury sustained in car accidents is a concussion. You may not feel its symptoms right away, but delayed treatment can result in a longer recovery time.  A concussion is a traumatic brain injury, customarily caused by a shock to the head. You can experience a concussion without losing consciousness.

Symptoms may be delayed, and you might not notice them right away. Some symptoms involve:

  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Failure to remember the traumatic incident
  • Queasiness, vomiting
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness

Back or spine injuries

Injuries to your spine, even very severe ones, are not always obvious right away. If you’ve been in a serious accident, or even if the event was minor but you have major trauma to your neck or your head, it’s best to assume you've suffered a spinal cord injury.

Swelling and bleeding in or around your spinal cord can produce numbness or paralysis that you can experience gradually. It’s important to receive treatment promptly after a car accident if there’s any likelihood you might have a spinal cord injury.

Less severe, but still of concern, is a gradually progressing back injury. Just as the muscles of your neck can be hurt as the result of a car accident, so can the muscles of your back. You might not apprehend that you have aching muscles or injury until a day or two later.

Sprains, strains, or other soft tissue injuries

You may not think that it’s possible your lower extremities would be harmed in a car accident, but it’s moderately common. And, just like the muscles in your neck and back, the muscles in other parts of your body may not be in pain right away. Wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries are also typical.

Internal injuries

Just as serious spinal cord injuries can develop gradually, so can different internal injuries. Internal bleeding may not be instantly apparent but can be life-threatening. It’s vital to seek treatment in the aftereffect of a car accident, particularly if it’s more than a slow-speed collision.

If you start feeling pain in the days following an auto accident, seek medical treatment. Your pain may be associated with injuries suffered during your crash.
