Preparing for Pain Management Procedures: What to Expect

Live Pain-Free. Book An Appointment Today.

Let's work together to find the right solution for your pain. Our board-certified doctors specialize in interventional pain treatments. Find out how we can help.

When you’re dealing with pain day after day, even the thought of a procedure can feel stressful. Most people walk in feeling nervous, unsure, or just plain tired of hurting. But here’s the good news: once you understand what actually happens before, during, and after your pain management procedure, the whole thing becomes a lot less intimidating.

And at Pain Care Specialists of Florida, we’re big on keeping you informed, comfortable, and supported — no surprises, no guessing. Just real guidance and real relief.

Meet Your Provider

At Pain Care Specialists of Florida, you’ll be in expert hands with Dr. Luis A. Escobar. With over 15 years of experience in anesthesiology and pain management, he focuses on treating the source of pain and helping patients — including injured workers — get back to their daily activities and work with confidence.

Before Your Procedure: A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

Nothing complicated here. The night before, keep things simple: eat light, sleep well if you can, and follow any instructions your provider gave you. If they told you to hold off on certain medications or stop eating at a certain time, stick to that.

And if you’re unsure? Seriously — call us. It’s better to ask than stress.

Bring these with you:

  • Your ID and insurance
  • A list of your medications
  • Comfy clothes
  • A ride home if sedation is involved

Most patients say just having a small “game plan” makes them feel way more relaxed walking in.

When You Arrive: Here’s Exactly What Happens

Once you check in, we’ll bring you back and go over everything again — your medical history, the procedure you’re having, what your pain’s been like lately. This is your time to ask anything, even if it feels like a “small question.” (There are no small questions when it comes to your health.)

Pain procedures like epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, joint injections, or trigger point injections are usually quick. You’ll get set up on the table, the skin gets cleaned, and a little numbing medicine goes in first.

What you might feel:

  • A little pinch or pressure
  • Some warmth
  • Maybe a quick “weird” feeling — but nothing dramatic

Most people are honestly surprised by how fast it’s done.

After Your Procedure: The Part Everyone Wants to Know About

Once it’s over, you’ll hang out in our recovery area for a bit. A nurse will make sure you feel steady and good to go. Some patients feel relief immediately; others feel sore or a little tight for a day or two — both are normal.

Here’s what helps recovery:

  • Rest the rest of the day
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoid heavy lifting
  • Ice if you’re sore (10–15 min at a time)
  • Follow any specific notes from your doctor

If your procedure was meant to “test” where the pain is coming from, take mental notes of how you feel afterward — that info is really helpful for your doctor.

When to Call Us (Just to Be Safe)

Complications are rare, but reach out right away if you notice:

  • Fever or chills
  • Redness or swelling that spreads
  • Numbness or weakness that doesn’t go away
  • Pain that feels “off” or unusually intense

We’d rather you call and it be nothing than sit at home wondering.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

Pain procedures can sound scary on paper, but once you walk through it  step by step, most people say, “That was it?” And honestly, that’s the goal. We want you to be comfortable, confident, and feel like you’re in good hands.
