Many people confuse wrist sprains with wrist tendonitis, but both are very different conditions. Wrist sprains affect the ligaments in your wrist that connect one bone to another. On the other hand, wrist tendonitis affects the tendons in your wrist that connect bones to muscles.

Your wrist is surrounded by tendons that are exerted each time you use your hand. Repetitive use of the wrist can cause the tendons around your wrist joint, especially those that cross each other, or those that pass over prominent bones, to become irritated. As a result, the tendon sheath swells, causing inflammation and pain.

Wrist tendonitis is a common health problem that our doctors at pain management clinic in South Florida deal with, owing to the fact that the wrist is one of the most commonly overused joints in the body.

Causes of Wrist Tendonitis

Wrist tendonitis is a form of repetitive strain injury (RSI). As mentioned earlier, activities that use the wrist repetitively, as well as repetitive movements, make the wrist more prone to developing tendonitis. Here are some of its causes:

  • Repetitive use of tools, or equipment that vibrate like sewing machines, electric saws, or jackhammers.
  • Typing on the computer, playing a musical instrument, or any activity that requires repetitive movements of the fingers, or wrists.
  • Sports that require repetitive flexing, or movement of the wrist like golf, tennis, baseball, or bowling.

It’s important to understand what exactly causes wrist tendonitis, allowing your doctor to make a proper diagnosis and provide appropriate help. This is why it’s important to understand its symptoms too.

Do You Have Wrist Tendonitis?

Wrist tendonitis can be painful. Worse, it can affect the way you handle your day-to-day activities. You can easily detect if something’s amiss with your wrist since most symptoms of wrist tendonitis occur at the wrist joint itself. Here are symptoms to watch out for:

  • A dull pain in the wrist that progresses and sometimes even affects the surrounding areas, like your hand and forearm.
  • Stiffness in the wrist, especially in the mornings.
  • Tenderness around the wrist, especially when applying pressure to the injured tendon.
  • Swelling of the area surrounding the wrist joint.
  • Crepitus or a grinding, creaking sensation felt on the wrist that occurs along with the movement of the injured tendons.
  • Feeling of warmth on the wrist.

Our qualified pain doctors study these signs so he can give you the right diagnosis. Once he verifies that you have wrist tendonitis, he’ll provide you with guidelines to help you manage the injury.

Treating and Managing Wrist Tendonitis with PRP

PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy, is a cell-free therapy that is widely used to treat tendinosis and tendinitis. It is a non-surgical way of promoting healing by injecting platelet-rich plasma derived from the patient’s own blood.

Initially, the doctor will draw blood from the patient. The blood components are separated through centrifugation to draw out the platelet-rich portion. Through an ultrasound-guided injection, the platelet is injected into your injured wrist.

Research has shown that tendinopathy conditions treated using PRP yields positive benefits. These include an increase in tendon cell regeneration, reduced inflammation, and an increase in the expression of anabolic genes and proteins.
