A torn rotator cuff happens when the group of muscles that support and stabilize the shoulder joints become injured, either partially or completely. It's quite a common injury - over 2 million people go to the doctor for torn rotator cuff issues, per to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon

According to experts in pain clinic, Hollywood, this condition can weaken the shoulder and prevent a person from carrying on with basic activities like getting dressed or combing the hair. When unmanaged or untreated, the tear in the shoulder muscles can lead to debilitating pain.

Symptoms of a Torn Rotator Cuff

A torn rotator cuff may either develop gradually or suddenly due to aging, the overuse of the shoulders and arms, or a fall trauma during a sports activity or an accident. Some patients don't get any symptoms of a torn rotator cuff. In some cases, torn rotator cuff is not painful, but it can immobilize the arms and shoulders.

If there is some pain, it may be mildly uncomfortable at first. The pain may get worse, however, when moving and lifting the arms or when doing routine tasks.

Over time, a torn rotator cuff pain can be present even when you are resting. There may be some popping sensations as well when you move your arms and shoulders as the muscle rips further. Lying down on the side of the weaker shoulder may also bring immense discomfort.

Why Treat a Torn Rotator Cuff

When you don't see a doctor, hence don't receive proper diagnosis or treatment for a torn rotator cuff, the problems on your shoulder can worsen. You could develop frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) or a chronic condition like arthritis.

Before treating a torn rotator cuff, the doctor in pain clinic, Hollywood will have to do a physical examination of the patient to determine the degree of pain, muscle strength and range of motion. Tests like X-ray, MRI, and ultrasound may be needed to support the diagnosis.

Injuries to the muscles are classified into grades based on severity. With a lower grade rotator cuff, a number of conservative treatments may work, such as

  • Resting the arms and shoulders by avoiding activities that could aggravate the pain
  • Applying cold compress every 4-6 hours for 15-20 minutes to reduce the inflammation
  • Applying heat to promote blood flow and relax the muscles
  • Physical therapy for massages, stretches and muscle exercises to regain range of motion
  • Taking pain relief medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
  • Acupuncture to reduce pain instead of taking pain medication
  • Corticosteroids injections to reduce the pain for a longer period without taking pain medication

PRP Therapy for Shoulder Pain

Some of these conservative treatments must be sustained for at least 3-6 months for the rotator cuff to completely recover. However, if the following conditions exist, it may be necessary to treat a torn rotator cuff with Platelet-Rich Plasma Prolotherapy (PRP):

  • Your shoulder problems have not improved after six months.
  • The tear on your shoulder is affecting your activities and quality of life.
  • You greatly rely on your shoulder’s use for your job.

PRP in Hollywood uses platelets from your own blood in order to heal your injury. After extracting a sample of your blood, this will go through centrifugation to separate the blood components. The platelet and plasma are then combined to create a platelet-rich plasma solution, which will be injected into your injured shoulder. This will trigger the body’s immune system to repair the injury with the help of macrophages (prepare the injured site for healing) and stem cells (regrow and repair damaged cells).

PRP therapy is a very easy process and you can go home immediately after the procedure. As you recover, you may be asked to come back for follow-up and more injections until you heal completely.
